250Z, GT-R on Nissan's wish list

Nissan Australia is expected to decide on a replacement for its ageing200SX sports car before the end of the year, as well as putting its hand upfor the new 250Z (pictured), which will make its way from a motor show concept to the production line.

Nissan Australia is expected to decide on a replacement for its ageing 200SX sports car before the end of the year, as well as putting its hand up for the new 250Z (pictured), which will make its way from a motor show concept to the production line.
But the Silvia Varietta, which features a Mercedes SLK-style metal fold-down roof and a non-turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, stands no chance of being sold here, according to Nissan Australia national public relations manager Brad Leach.

"The Varietta would be very expensive and only very low volumes," he said. "So no, were not looking at it."

The sleek 200SX, which replaced the more captivating and more expensive 300ZX in Australia, is nearing the end of its model life and has been replaced in Japan by a new version of the Silvia (the Japanese version of the car we get here).

While Nissan originally designed the new Silvia for the Japanese market only, Nissan Australia is now confident of getting the updated model.advertisement

"Were continuing to look at the (new) 200SX," said Leach. "So yes, were still working on it and hope to know more in about a month after a product planning meeting."

The new 200SX, which maintains the performance-oriented rear-drive layout, boasts an updated version of the existing cars 147kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. However, its much more keenly equipped and includes features such as a six-speed manual transmission. But Nissan says its at least a year off for Australia.

And Nissan Australia is also excited about last months Tokyo Motor Show announcement that a replacement for the famous breed of Z-cars, unveiled as a concept earlier this year, will go into production. The 2.5-litre six-cylinder coupe is slated for early 2002 production, kick-starting Nissans image car. However, Nissan Australia says a production-ready version is scheduled to be shown by Nissan next year.

It is not yet known whether the 250Z will be built in right-hand drive, because the American market will be the cars major focus. The US market was so desperate for a Z-car, the companys US arm even began fully restoring old 240Zs to keep some buyers satisfied.

Nissan Australia says it will consider selling the 200SX and 250Z alongside each other.

"Well certainly have a look at both and yes, thats a possibility," said Leach.

According to a UK magazine, Nissan is also looking at widening the appeal of its "GT-R" badge, which until now has been exclusively reserved for the potent twin-turbocharged four-wheel-drive Skyline. "Godzilla", as it was nicknamed because of its V8-crushing form in the Australian touring car championship, was sold here in the early 1990s but skyrocketing costs meant only 100 (R32 models) were imported by Nissan. Private imports of the later (R33 and R34) models have filtered their way into the country and Nissan is waiting "to push the button" pending the Governments decision on low-volume imports.

But according to reports, the GT-R badge could soon be seen on other, more affordable, performance Nissans, such as the Pulsar and 200SX.

Без паники, господа, это очень ранний прототип, и японопапы от него благоразумно отказались.

Есть куда более симпотный прототип. См. тут: http://www.nismo-club.ru/board/viewtopic.php?t=9733&lighter=silvia
